CD Review: Kaiser Chiefs - Yours Truly, Angry Mob
Released: 26th February 2007

It's about time the t'Chiefs returned onto the music scene, and after becoming one of the best-selling bands in the UK with their debut in 2005, doubts were raised in many minds as to whether it would be possible to write a follow-up of such quality. With the release of the catchy-but-gets-old-fast Ruby, even I wondered if they would be a one-album wonder. One listen to this album proved otherwise.

The first noticeable distinction between this album and its predecessor is that it contains more of an upbeat sound. While around half of the Employment album presented slower and less mainstream songs, only one or two on Yours Truly explore this route. The first of these, 'Love Is Not A Competition (But I'm Winning)', is a well-written acoustic track that deserves some recognition and plenty of listens. Another appears late in the CD, and is quite easily the weakest track - ironically, it is titled 'Try Your Best'.

The second noticeable distinction is that none of the tracks are quite as outstanding or captivating as debut-album blinders Every Day I Love You Less And Less and Na Na Na Na Naa or the anthemic I Predict A Riot - only, in my opinion, does 'Heat Dies Down' come close. Instead, we have a collection of good, memorable songs ('The Angry Mob', 'Thank You Very Much', 'Everything Is Average Nowadays') that are well within the capability to catch the attention of their listeners and do perhaps boast potential to rival the popularity of the older Kaiser Chiefs songs. This, to me, constitutes a better quality album than one with a few mindblowing songs mixed with some that are often skipped altogether.

And, of course, the third noticeable difference is that Ricky no longer 'ohhhhhhhhh-ohhhhh-OHHHHHH's at you.

While Employment was a great debut, this album takes the biscuit with its great hooks and larger selection of upbeat, danceable tracks. My only negative point about the CD is the quality of the lyrics - but we can bypass that to enjoy the quality of the songs themselves. Yours Truly, Angry Mob is a great effort from the Kaiser Chiefs - it's one the boys are going to struggle to beat.
