Stereoglo and Jyrojets were originally planned to support The Cinematics on their UK tour, but at the last minute, they pulled out, giving Jyrojets the headlining slot.
The evening began with an energetic performance by young Stromness band Dazed. They had a different singer from usual, but she managed to provide us with an excellent performance. They performed a set of covers of Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Status Quo and Reel Big Fish to get the crowd going, and lead guitarist Andrew Cowan showed off his skills in a Hendrix cover.
Up next were KGS favourites, Seamonkey Bringers Of Dooom. They entertained everyone with their onstage banter, and they played various ska punk songs – Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish and No Doubt - and piss-take covers of ‘80s songs like The Final Countdown and Take On Me. One of the favourites as always was Ghostbusters, which managed to get the audience going crazy.
It was time for Stereoglo, who contrasted with the previous bands with their softer, acoustic sound. Despite this, they managed to get the crowd going, especially with their interaction as they cruised through the tracks on their EP as well as some older tunes such as Sleepy Gypsy and Preacher.
Everyone gathered round the front of the stage again for the Jyrojets’ set, but half way through the set, people were evidently losing interest. Perhaps it was the lack of interaction with the crowd (which didn’t get past much apart from introducing the songs). Or maybe the night had just been going on for too long. The music itself, however, was top notch – a loud beat with slightly more mellow vocals over the top, giving overall a great sound. They were certainly tight as musicians (in between running into each other whilst playing!), but perhaps the lack of enthusiasm drew some of the crowd away. It was, despite this, an enjoyable set for those who did stay, and I personally think they were a great end to the night.
